3-month-old baby boy reunited with detained mom in Dubai

In response to the plea of a woman in jail, the Dubai Police reunited the imprisoned mother with her 3-month-old son. The Naif Police Station's Victim Support Team took the initiative as part of a humanitarian gesture after the mother expressed her concern that there was no one she could trust to look after her baby. According to Brigadier Dr Tariq Muhammad Noor Tahlak, director of Naif Police Station, the woman was detained because of a dispute she had with an African woman. “The woman approached one of our female officers and requested her to check on her 3-month-old baby, claiming that she had no family members she could entrust the baby to," the director said. Colonel Jamila Al Zaabi, director of Women's Prison in the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Institutions, confirmed that prison is not suitable for children. However, some female inmates are left with no choice because there are no family members outside the facility to care for the child until they have fully served their imprisonment. According to Col. Al Zaabi, if the woman is psychologically healthy and competent to care for her infant, the child can stay with the mother in a facility designed for women with children. The facility provides access to all the needs and services, including medical care and periodic check-ups for women and children. BKM/Expat Media
