  SINGAPORE – Three British nationals of Vietnamese descent were each meted a jail sentence with caning for aggravated molestation of a Malaysian woman in a hotel on September 10 last year. The three foreigners were initially accused of rape but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of "aggravated outrage of modesty while using wrongful restraint" as part of a plea bargain with authorities. The Strait Times of Singapore identified the convicted foreigners as Khong Tam Thanh, 22; Vu Thai Son, 24 and Le Michael, 24, who are British citizens of Vietnamese descent. The woman was not identified. Than and Vu also pleaded guilty to an additional charge of outrage of modesty in the sexual assault, reports said. The Singapore court meted a six year jail term on Thanh with eight strokes of the cane. Son was given a six-and-a-half-year jail sentence with eight strokes of the cane while Le was ordered jailed for five and a half years and ordered that he be caned five times. Judicial Commissioner Hoo Sheau Peng described the act of the three men as "reprehensible". Peng said while the woman was asleep and unable to protect herself, "they took advantage of her vulnerable state so as to commit these serious sexual crimes." "In doing so, they showed no respect for her dignity and autonomy, and no regard for any harm and hurt they might cause to her." The Strait Times said Peng found Son as the most culpable because he was the only one who had unprotected sex with the woman thus exposing the victim to the risk of unwanted pregnancy and sexually-transmitted diseases while Thanh was found more culpable than Le because he left the room door ajar after he had had sex with the woman, thereby facilitating further sexual offenses. Peng said further that by pleading guilty to the reduced charges, the three men had spared the victim the agony of testifying in court. Thanh will start serving his sentence on Aug. 22 and Le was permitted to begin his on Aug. 18 so that they can spend time with their respective families who have flown from Britain. Each of them posted a bail of $50,000 each. Son, on the other hand, had been remanded after his arrest.
