UAE commuters are eagerly awaiting the launch of a high-speed passenger train that will connect Dubai and Abu Dhabi in just 30 minutes. The all-electric train, operated by Etihad Rail, promises to revolutionize intercity travel with cutting-edge technology and convenience. Etihad Rail is simultaneously working on a larger UAE-wide passenger train service, featuring 11 stations and a capacity to transport 400 passengers at speeds of up to 200 km/h. However, the Dubai-Abu Dhabi service will outpace this with an all-electric train capable of reaching speeds of 350 km/h.

When will it begin service?

There has yet been no announcement on the official start date of operations, but Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, said that the project is in its initial tendering phase and that the train and its infrastructure are fully designed.

What are the key stops and stations?

The Dubai-Abu Dhabi train will include six stations, strategically located at Reem Island, Saadiyat, Yas Island, and Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, as well as near Al Maktoum International Airport and Al Jaddaf in Dubai. These stops are designed to integrate with key urban and tourism hubs, ensuring maximum connectivity for passengers.

How much will a train ticket cost?

While details regarding ticket prices remain under wraps, the train is anticipated to offer a competitive alternative to existing transport modes. Currently, intercity buses between Dubai and Abu Dhabi start at Dh25 per trip, and driving the 139km distance takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes.

How fast can it go?

The Dubai-Abu Dhabi train will operate at an impressive top speed of 350 km/h, making it one of the fastest passenger trains globally, comparable to the Shanghai Transrapid, which operates at a top speed of 460 km/h. The reduction in travel time is expected to benefit daily commuters, tourists, and business travelers alike.

Could Dubai Metro timings inspire the train schedule?

While Etihad Rail has yet to reveal operating hours, comparisons can be drawn with the Dubai Metro’s extensive schedule. The Metro operates from 5am to midnight Monday to Thursday and Saturday, extending to 1am on Fridays, with Sunday service from 8am to midnight. A similar timetable for the high-speed train would accommodate both early morning commuters and late-night travelers, ensuring optimal convenience. Such a schedule would particularly benefit those using the train to access Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport or Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport, as well as professionals traveling between the two cities for work.

Who will manage the train?

The train will be run and managed by Etihad Rail.

How is it different from a previously announced Etihad Rail passenger train?

The train is part of a broader initiative by Etihad Rail to launch a nationwide passenger service featuring 11 stations and a maximum speed of 200 km/h. However, the Dubai-Abu Dhabi service stands out with its unprecedented speed and dedicated six-stop route. As the UAE continues to prioritize infrastructure development, this project reflects the nation’s vision of integrating advanced technology with sustainable solutions. The high-speed train is expected to significantly boost economic activity, improve intercity connectivity, and offer a world-class travel experience. ICA/PIA/Expat Media
