Protests, clashes spread to other cities; Ram Rahim to be sentenced Monday

  PANCHKULA – Violence involving Dera Sacha Sauda followers broke out in this town in Haryana state following the conviction on Friday of their spiritual guru Ram Rahim for the rape of two women followers in 2002. Clashes between Rahim's supporters and the police and incidents of arson left at least 31 sect members dead and 250 others, mostly policemen, hurt in Panchkula, according to officials. The violence spread to other Indian cities. Reports said the Indian Army was called in to Panchkula at 5 p.m. to restore order in the town after Rahim's supporters went on a rampage. Police used tear gas and doused the rioters with water from cannons to disperse them but the supporters outnumbered the police. Some buildings in Panchkula were set afire on Friday. The violence subsided at 7 p.m. and the Army was deployed to Sirsa – Rahim's base. In New Delhi, there were reports of a bus and two empty coaches of a train that were set ablaze, prompting Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to appeal for calm. The country's capital has been placed on high alert and public assemblies have been prohibited in several parts of Delhi along the border with Haryana, report said. Indian media was not spared from the wrath of Rahim's supporters. Vans belonging to various media outlets were set on fire. NDTV said one of their engineers was mauled. Curfew has been raised in several Indian cities and town as a result of the violence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the violence in tweets, calling the rampage as "deeply distressing". He also said the government is closely monitoring the situation in Panchkula. Reports said Rahim will be sentenced in court on Monday and had been flown to a guesthouse in Rohtak. From there, he was moved to a special prison. Meanwhile, Rahim's lawyers will file an appeal.
