5 Filipinos on trial in Dubai over restaurant theft

  DUBAI – Five Filipinos—4 men and a woman—are on trial for allegedly stealing a total of Dh108,000 worth of cash and food from a restaurant where they worked. A Kenyan restaurant manager testified that the group, including the female supervisor, a cook and three waiters, were caught on surveillance cameras stealing the items. The manager said that suspicions were raised in March when many customers paid in cash, however, daily revenues still appeared low. He said that he and the restaurant owner then arranged for an undercover customer to buy food from the restaurant with a marked Dh100 bill. “At the end of the day when we checked the cash register, we did not find that bill. The transaction was not put in the e-system either," the Kenyan manager said. He said that they checked the surveillance cameras and found that the five staff members had been stealing money and meals from the restaurant. He said that the supervisor kept the money and at the end of her shift would split the cash with the staff members. During investigation of the public prosecution, the Filipinos admitted to stealing money and meals. A waiter also confessed that the thefts happened during the late shift and on lunch break. The cook said that the meals eaten by the staff were originally prepared for customers who later cancelled their orders. The trial resumes on September 30.
