5 Indian expats in trouble over 'fake jewellery' posts

  DUBAI – Five Indian expatriates are reportedly facing criminal charges after circulating social media posts alleging that a jewellery chain in the UAE is selling fake gold. The Dubai Public Prosecution has directed the Dubai Police to initiate criminal proceedings for charges of cyber crime and internet abuse against the five suspects. During a police investigation, one of the suspects admitted to slandering the company by circulating a post on social media. The posts, which have gone viral on social media and WhatsApp, claimed that the showrooms of Kalyan Jewellers in the UAE were shut down and its owners were arrested for selling fake or adulterated gold jewellery. The group has denied the claims, and called the recent social media posts a conspiracy to malign its brand. In a statement on Friday, T.S Kalyanaraman, Chairman and Managing Director of Kalyan Jewellers, said: “It is very reassuring to see the steps taken by the Dubai Police to contain the social media abusers. This is evidence enough for the perpetrators to know that social media slandering will not be taken lightly." "Such instances of fake propagated by a few irresponsible individuals, is an attempt to tarnish the image and reputation of brands,” he added. This is not the first time Kalyan Jewellers has fielded rumours about adulteration of gold jewellery in its showrooms. In 2017, videos circulated on social media that claimed to be showing authorities examining hollowed gold bracelets with metal wires inside.
