5 Indian murder convicts freed from Dubai jail after 18 years, return home

Five Indian convicts have been freed from jail in Dubai after 18 years, and reunited with their families on Tuesday (February 20), according to Indian officials. Shivarathri Mallesh, Shivarathri Ravi, Gollem Nampally, Dundugula Laxman and Shivarathri Hanmanthu were greeted by their families at Hyderabad airport. The men, from Telangana state in India, were convicted of murder and initially sentenced to 25 years in jail, equivalent to life in jail in the UAE. They were construction workers in Dubai and got involved in a brawl with a Nepalese security guard in 2005 that resulted in the latter’s death at their Sonapur accommodation. Their early release from jail came after the help of the Indian Consulate in Dubai, the Telangana government and social groups. An official from the Telangana government reportedly visited the family of the victim and received a “No Objection Certificate” for the release of the five men.
