Five men who have been in jail in Dubai for more than 16 years for murdering a security guard have lost their appeal for early release. The Dubai court rejected the men’s appeal on Monday (August 7). The convicts, from India and Pakistan, are part of a 10-member gang convicted 16 years ago. The murder happened in 2006 after the security guard caught the group stealing 100 metres of cable worth Dh3,300 from a building site in Jebel Ali. In 2007, the five men were sentenced to life in jail, which is equivalent to 25 years in prison in the UAE. Their five accomplices were sentenced to 10 years in jailed followed by deportation. According to records, two men served as lookouts, while two others helped the five men to break into the site. As the five men stole the cables, they were caught by the security guard, whom they strangled. They then fled the site with the driver of their getaway vehicle, driving off to Sharjah where they eventually sold the stolen cables. The murder was discovered after the security guard’s brother, who was working at the same building site, arrived for work the next morning. Dubai police were able to recover fingerprints of some of the men at the crime scene. Eight men were arrested in the UAE, while two others fled to Oman where they were arrested by local authorities and extradited to the UAE. Five men had appealed for an early release from jail after serving more than 16 years in prison, but the request was denied early this week. They can submit another appeal in 2025. ICA/Expat Media
