The army reported that six Pakistani soldiers were killed in a firefight with militants near the Afghan border on Tuesday (August 22). The parties involved in the exchange of fire remained unclear, leading to the death of four militants and there was no immediate claim of responsibility. "During an intense exchange of fire, six brave soldiers, having fought gallantly, embraced martyrdom," said the army, noting that it occurred in the North Waziristan district. Waziristan has long served as a sanctuary for militants associated with both domestic Islamist groups engaged in conflict against the state and the Afghan Taliban. MFD/Expat Media
