60,000 cars to keep off roads of Dubai, Al Ain Ajman, RAK on February 4
DUBAI – Don’t be surprised if you don’t see as many cars on roads in Dubai, Al Ain Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah on February 4.
More than 60,000 motorists from these emirates are joining Dubai Municipality’s annual Car Free Day initiative and ditch their cars to use public transport for a day.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, director-general of Dubai Municipality, said the event has become a UAE-wide campaign to reduce the UAE’s carbon footprint.
Lootah welcomed other municipality’s plan to join the initiative, which is now on its 9th year. He said that the event also aims to encourage people to use mass transport.
Lootah said last year’s initiative involved 200 organisations and 2,444 individuals, contributing to a reduction of about 174 tonnes of carbon emission.
The initiative started in Dubai in 2010, with 1,000 vehicles kept off the roads by Dubai Municipality officials and employees.
This year’s Car Free Day will involve more than 60,000 vehicles that are likely to be off the road on February 4, Lootah added.
Participants are encouraged to register on
www.dm.gov.ae and look out for social media contests.
