Portuguese government declares three days of mourning

  LISBON – A wildfire caused by a dry thunderstorm raged through Pedrógão Grande in central Portugal last Saturday, killing 61 people and injuring 54 others, including eight firemen and a child. The Portuguese government declared three days of mourning following what officials described as the "greatest wildfire tragedy of recent years." Firefighters were still battling with the blaze as of yesterday. According to Portugal's state-run news agency Lusa, judiciary police head José Maria Almeida Rodrigues said the fire "was caused by dry thunderstorms" and that some people burned to death in their cars that got trapped in the raging wildfires as they tried to flee the affected community of Pedrógão Grand. Pedrógão Grande is located 120 miles north of the Portuguese capital. Interior Ministry official Jorge Gomez told CNN affiiate TVI: "Many cars could not get out and people burned to death inside their cars." Pedrógão Grande Mayor Valdemar Alves told TVI there were areas that were "completely surrounded" by the wildfire and not enough firefighters to battle the flames. "The violence of this fire was such that I am certain many people have died. I am shocked with this death toll," he said, adding that the number of dead may go up as fire personnel inspect the affected villages. Meanwhile, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said classes in the affected municipalities of Pedrogão, Figueiró and Castanheira will be suspended indefinitely.
