Woman, 63, oldest to give birth in UAE after getting pregnant via IVF done in India

  DUBAI – In what is touted to be a first in the UAE, a 63-year-old Sri Lankan woman gave birth to a baby girl via caesarean procedure at a hospital in Dubai. The woman conceived through IVF or in vitro fertilization in India and gave birth to a healthy baby at Thumbay hospital, making her the oldest woman to give birth in the UAE. Both the mother and baby are doing well. The woman and her Indian husband who works in Ras Al Khaimah declined to disclose their names. Obstetrician-gynecologist Jagaud Nirmala of Thumbay Hospital said it was the first time she had a patient who is more than 60 years old give birth. But there have been cases in other places worldwide of women aged between 50 and 60 and older who have given birth. "The patient consulted the hospital in the 32nd week of her pregnancy after undergoing In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) in India. But I was very confident of handling the challenge as both the mother and child seemed fine after the initial examination," said Nirmala. Nirmala also said the woman's pregnancy was delicate since she suffers from diabetes, hypertension and her placenta blocked the uterus making normal delivery impossible. Reports quoted hospital sources as saying that the woman has two children from a previous marriage and the eldest is 13 years old already. She and her second husband decided they wanted to have a child so the woman underwent IVF in India.
