70-year-old UAE expat survives Covid-19 after 35 days in ICU

DUBAI – A 70-year-old Indian expatriate in the UAE has survived the new coronavirus after more than a month in the hospital. Abdul Raheem Salam had spent 35 days in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Prime Hospital after contracting coronavirus on April 24. Salam had suffered pneumonia that damaged both his lungs. He had recovered on Thursday but is required to remain on a respirator to help him breathe. Dr. Dirar Abduallah, the head of ICU at Prime Hospital, said Salam was in critical condition on his first five days at the hospital and had to be put on a ventilator. The doctor said that Salam’s condition eventually improved, adding that it helped that he did not have pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, which are thought to make Covid-19 patients more vulnerable. Salam is the oldest person to have been treated for Covid-19 in the hospital, Dr. Abduallah said. Salam was due to retire and return to India this year after working as a school bus driver in the UAE where he has lived since 1986. He is expected to fly home to India to be reunited with his wife and their two daughters when he is well enough to travel on a repatriation flight.
