Since the UAE lifted a ban on personal and recreational drone use on January 7, enthusiasts can now fly their machines under strict guidelines. Here’s what you need to know to fly your drone legally and safely across the UAE: 1. Ban exemptions in Dubai: While personal use remains banned and "under review" in Dubai, the ban has been lifted across the UAE as of January 7, allowing enthusiasts elsewhere to enjoy drone flying. 2. Registration via Unified National Drone Platform: Enthusiasts must register their drones and operate them through the Unified National Drone Platform. This platform simplifies registration and ensures compliance with safety standards. ALSO READ: How to register your drone in UAE 3. Weight and approved zones: Drones must weigh 5kg or less, and flights are restricted to specific approved zones marked as green zones in the "My Drone Hub" app for recreational flying. 4. Daytime and weather restrictions: Flying is permitted only during daylight hours and under favorable weather conditions to ensure safe operation. 5. No commercial activities: Drones are strictly for leisure purposes; no commercial activities are permitted under the recreational use guidelines. 6. Prohibited zones: Avoid flying drones near airports, heliports, or sensitive areas such as government buildings to prevent interference with air traffic and ensure public safety and national security. 7. Height and line of sight: Drones must be operated within the operator's line of sight and should not exceed 400 feet (approximately 122 meters) above ground level. 8. Privacy and camera use: Drones equipped with cameras must adhere to UAE's privacy laws. Use cameras only in designated flying zones to respect privacy regulations. These rules are designed to promote safe and responsible drone use while fostering a thriving recreational drone community in the UAE. By adhering to these guidelines, enthusiasts can enjoy their hobby while contributing to a secure airspace environment. ICA/Expat Media
