80-year-old woman with cotton bud stuck in throat saved from death in Al Ain

DUBAI – An 80-year-old Emirati woman with a cotton bud stuck in her throat was saved from near death, thanks to doctors in Al Ain. The cotton bud got stuck in her throat after her homecare assistant accidentally dropped it into her breathing tube while cleaning it. To make matters worse, the 10-cm cotton bud moved to the woman’s right bronchus, an airway to the lungs, which caused her difficulty in breathing. She was taken to Burjeel Hospital in Al Ain after her oxygen levels started to drop. A family member said the woman was “gasping” for air. “By the time she reached the hospital, her oxygen saturation levels had gone critically low,” said ENT surgeon Dr. Ayman Helal. The woman was immediately transferred to an operating room. She had been bedridden for years and was using a breathing tube to help her breathe. Dr. Helal said the cotton bud stuck in the woman’s bronchus also triggered mild bleeding in her lungs. It took the medical team four hours to remove the cotton bud and stabilize the woman’s condition. Luckily, her health improved after the surgery and she was able to recover quickly and was discharged from hospital the next day, Dr. Helal said. The woman’s family thanked doctors for saving the woman in a “tough moment” and extending her life.  ICA/Expat Media
