More than 8,000 delivery riders in Dubai have been fined in the first weeks of enforcing a new ban on motorcycles using fast lanes, Dubai Police confirmed. The rule, which came into effect at the start of the month, prohibits delivery bikes from using the two leftmost lanes on roads with five or more lanes, and the leftmost lane on roads with three or four lanes. Riders may use any lane on two-lane roads. Brigadier Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said the early numbers highlight the risks motorcyclists face when riding in high-speed zones. “Motorcycles are vulnerable because they lack protective structure, and high speeds make it harder for riders to avoid sudden hazards,” he said. He noted that the new rule is part of a wider five-year traffic safety plan developed jointly with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority. The strategy aims to reduce deaths and injuries through sustained monitoring and enforcement, better road engineering, public awareness campaigns and improved traffic systems. Penalties for violating the lane restrictions start at Dh500 for a first offence and increase to Dh700 for repeat violations. A third violation results in the suspension of the rider’s licence. Riders who exceed 100 km/h on 100 km/h roads face fines ranging from Dh200 to Dh400 depending on the frequency of the offence. Bin Suwaidan stressed that delivery riders are an essential part of Dubai’s service network, making their safety a priority. He urged riders to avoid fast lanes entirely, follow speed limits, steer clear of sudden manoeuvres and wear proper helmets and protective gear. He also encouraged regular bike inspections, especially checking brakes and tyres, and reminded riders to avoid using mobile phones while riding. Dubai Police continue to conduct field inspections to ensure compliance. Public awareness drives targeting riders and delivery companies are also underway. “Our goal is to protect all road users by ensuring everyone shares the responsibility for safety,” Bin Suwaidan said.
