Operations conducted by anti-narcotics operations from UAE, other Gulf countries
ABU DHABI – The UAE Ministry of Interior said on Monday that anti-narcotic authorities have confiscated an estimated eight million Captagon pills in a series of drug busts carried out since March this year in coordination with anti-drug units from neighboring Gulf countries.Numerous drug traffickers were arrested in the drug busts and were charged with possessing and smuggling illegal drugs into the UAE, the ministry added. Last March, federal anti-narcotics authorities and their Jordanian counterparts thwarted a plan by two Gulf nationals to peddle illegal drugs in the UAE that resulted in the confiscation of 150,000 Captagon pills in Abu Dhabi, the ministry revealed. A week after that operation, the ministry reported that the federal department, in cooperation with the Anti-Narcotics Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, seized 424,200 banned drug pills from a suspect who had hidden the drugs in a residential apartment in Abu Dhabi. In yet another operation, UAE anti-drug officers and Saudi Arabia's Anti-Narcotics Directorate confiscated 2.12 million Captagon pills that were hidden in a vehicle in Umm Al Quwain. Some of the drug suspects attempted to flee to Saudi Arabia but were arrested. After three months of investigation, authorities busted a drug trafficking ring in Ras Al Khaimah and seized 4.2 million banned Captagon pills, which were hidden in farm seeds. The suspects were later charged with smuggling drugs into the country. Also, the Federal Anti-Narcotics Department arrested five foreigners in Dubai and seized about 353,000 Captagon pills from their possession. In May, two persons from Gulf countries were nabbed in an undercover operation. The drug suspects stayed in a hotel in Abu Dhabi hotel and had hidden 150,000 Captagon pills in their vehicle at the hotel's parking lot. Officers also seized Dh186,000 cash from them. Last August, 777,250 Captagon pills were seized from a suspect who tried to smuggle them into the country through one of the country's ports. The suspect hid the drugs in the false ceiling of a wooden ship as it entered the UAE's territorial waters from another country. Investigators said the accused was going to deliver the drugs to an Arab national living in Sharjah. Meanwhile, Col.Saeed Al Suwaidi, director-general of Federal Anti-Narcotics at the Ministry of interior, thanked Saudi and Jordanian authorities for their cooperation in arresting the drug traffickers and praised the anti-narcotics departments of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah for seizing the illicit drugs.
