A sunken dhow boat retrieved from the Dubai Creek. DUBAI MUNICIPALITY
Nine dhow boats and vessels that have sunk in the Dubai Creek have been retrieved as part of the Dubai Municipality’s annual cleaning campaign. According to the Dubai Municipality, it retrieved around 820 tons of marine debris from the sunken vessels. Earlier this year, Dubai Municipality removed three sunken ships and three boats. It has recovered a total of 37 sunken vessels in the past years. “Our strategy is divided into phases with the goal of eliminating all canal waste that obstructs the navigational movement of boats and vessels and disrupts trade and tourism traffic," said Saeed Abdul Rahim Safar, Director of Waste Operations Department at Dubai Municipality. Safar said the cleanup campaign is also aimed at preventing marine pollution “caused by these residues with environmentally dangerous industrial products and substances from engines, which can endanger Dubai's native life and fisheries."
