Four hundred others injured in explosion in a fortified diplomatic area of the Afghan capital

  KABUL – A big explosion hit a fortified diplomatic area in the Aghan capital killing 90 people and injuring 400 others yesterday. It was one of the deadliest to hit Kabul in recent years. The explosive, which was hidden in a water delivery truck, went off near during the rush hour outside the offices of a local telecom company and a TV station and near Zanbaq Square. The site of the explosion was a busy area as supermarkets and shops were situated there. The deadly blast in the capital of Muslim-dominated Afghanistan occurred just four days after the start of the holy month of Ramadan. Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Donati, who is in Kabul, told CNN the explosion happened close to foreign embassies, government institutions and the residences of high-ranking officials. As such, it's supposed to be a secure area of Kabul, which can be reached only by passing through several checkpoints. The UAE, Turkish and Iranian embassies were in the immediate vicinity of the blast while the German, UK and US embassies and the Afghan presidential palace were a few blocks away. US officials said 11 Americans assigned to the US embassy as contractors were injured in the explosion and nine Afghan security personnel were killed. BBC said their Afghan driver who had worked with the boradcasting company for four years was killed in the explosion while four journalists were injured. The Taliban denied responsibility for the attack but the Afghanistan's intelligence service, the National Directorate of Security, blamed the Haqqani Network, a Pakistani group linked to the Taliban, of carrying out the bombing. The office of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani tweeted: "Our prayers are with the victims and their families of this inhuman and cowardly attack. May Allah strengthen all those working for peace. Our thoughts are with the families of deceased & prayers with the injured." Meanwhile, German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Adebahr said the embassy in Kabul would remain closed until further notice and the local staff were receiving medical care. "The attack was aimed at civilians and those who are in Afghanistan to work with the people there for a better future of the country," said German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, adding that embassy officials had been injured but that "all employees are safe." However, an Afghan security officer protecting the German embassy area was killed, Gabriel also said. Indian Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted: "By God's grace, Indian Embassy staff are safe in the massive Kabul blast." The Indian embassy was also near the blast site.
