'Abaya war' at Dubai Global Village lands 2 in court

  DUBAI – A Palestinian businessman and a Jordanian businesswoman have ended up in court after a war over abayas at Global Village in Dubai. The Palestinian allegedly assaulted the Jordanian after he accused her of stealing the design of the abayas he was selling at Global Village, the Dubai court was told. On the day of the incident in December, the woman was talking with a Syrian vendor at her booth when the Palestinian grabbed her from behind and started beating her. “He took me by surprise from the back and beat me. He called me a magician and an arrogant person,” the woman testified. The Syrian vendor tried to stop the scuffle, but not before the Palestinian man threatened to kill the woman unless she drop a criminal case against him. “He also insulted me before others when he said that I should repent otherwise he would slaughter me. He wanted me to waive my complaint against him,” she testified to prosecutors. Police apprehended the 37-year-old businessman after the incident. His case was then referred to prosecutors who charged him with assault and making verbal threats. At the Dubai Court of First Instance, the businessman denied threatening the Jordanian but admitted that he “intended to scare her in order to make her drop her complaint.” He also complained about the police officer who arrested him, claiming that the policeman “handcuffed me and told me that he would put me in prison for life”. The judge advised him to file a written complaint about the matter to the Public Prosecution. The court is expected to issue a verdict on March 11.
