Abu Dhabi, Al Ain churches and temple to get new legal status

  DUBAI – A total of 17 churches in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and the UAE’s first traditional Hindu temple will receive official legal status on Sunday. Abu Dhabi’s Department of Community Development said the move will ensure that religious leaders of these 18 places of worship can ask for support and get permission to host special events. The licensing of places of worship provides “an official unified channel within the government for religious bodies to go for special services and when they need advice or support and to assist their day-to-day running," said Sultan Al Daheri, executive director of the Department of Community Development. Places of worship in the UAE have been operating with informal approval from local authorities. Sunday’s licensing function will also mark International Peace Day and comes as the UAE celebrates 2019 as the Year of Tolerance. Several churches lit up in green over the weekend ahead of International Peace Day. Among those that will be official recognized are St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Abu Dhabi’s oldest church that was built in 1965, and the UAE’s first traditional Hindu temple expected to open in Abu Mureikhah area in 2022.
