Abu Dhabi authority issues jellyfish warning

The Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) has warned beachgoers in Abu Dhabi about jellyfish reportedly washing ashore. “Avoid contact with jellyfish. Maintain a safe distance to ensure your safety. If stung by a jellyfish, consult your doctor or visit a hospital in case of serious stings,” according to EAD in an advisory. “These species can inflict minor stings, which are harmless and are generally unnoticed by beachgoers. However, people with allergies should be careful as jellyfish stings can lead to skin rashes,” the authority added. Severe symptoms of a jellyfish sting include skin blisters, difficulty in breathing, nausea, abdominal pain and numbness or tingling. Jellyfish have been reported on the shores of Abu Dhabi as temperatures rise due to the approaching summer season. “Usually, most jellyfish colonies appear as the water temperature rises in the summer and begin to gradually decline as the temperature drops,” according to EAD. The authority said that Abu Dhabi waters are home to seven types of jellyfish. The most common jellyfish are the moon jellyfish and blue blubber jellyfish. ICA/Expat Media
