Integrated Transport Centre announced that delivery motorcycles will be banned from selected roads in Abu Dhabi beginning May 15 as part of measures aimed at improving road safety. According to the authority on Friday (May 8), the restriction will apply to roads with speed limits of 120kph or higher. The ban will also cover a section of Sheikh Zayed Road stretching from Sheikh Zayed Bridge to Sheikh Zayed Tunnel. “This measure is part of an integrated system aimed at raising road safety standards and improving traffic flow on vital routes, ensuring a safer transport environment for all road users,” the authority said. The announcement comes amid continuing concerns over traffic accidents involving sudden swerving and unsafe lane changes. According to figures released by the UAE Ministry of Interior, sudden swerving was the leading cause of traffic accidents across the UAE in 2025. Authorities recorded 6,014 traffic accidents nationwide last year, with sudden swerving accounting for 905 crashes, or nearly one in every six accidents. Officials said the behaviour is often linked to missed exits, distracted driving, impatience, or failure to pay attention on the road. Authorities have increasingly introduced stricter traffic measures and enforcement campaigns to reduce accident rates and improve safety for motorists, delivery riders and pedestrians. Delivery motorcycles have become a common sight across UAE roads in recent years due to growing demand for food delivery and e-commerce services. Officials urged motorists and riders alike to comply with traffic regulations and prioritise road safety at all times.
