The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has banned the cultivation, production, propagation, and circulation of the oleander plant in Abu Dhabi. The plant, known for its vibrant flowers but toxic properties, poses significant health risks, particularly to children and pets. Oleander, a popular ornamental shrub found along roadsides and in gardens, contains toxins that can cause severe symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and irregular heartbeat when ingested. Even minimal exposure can result in serious health complications, with extreme cases potentially leading to death. Mouza Suhail Al Muhairi, ADAFSA’s Deputy Director General, stated, “This ban is a proactive measure to ensure the health and safety of the community. Oleander is a dangerous plant, and removing it from public spaces is crucial in preventing accidental poisonings.” The ban is part of Abu Dhabi’s larger effort to enhance public safety and protect biodiversity. Dr. Salem Al Kaabi from the Department of Municipalities and Transport said that efforts to remove the plant from urban areas would be ongoing, in collaboration with private landowners. Authorities have urged the public to dispose of the plant safely and to report any violations. The authority also advises anyone exposed to the plant to call the Poison and Drug Information Services hotline at 800424.
