Abu Dhabi begins imposing fines for e-scooter violations

Abu Dhabi authorities have begun enforcing fines for traffic violations involving e-scooters and bicycles in the UAE capital. The fines vary between Dh200 and Dh500 for failure to follow road safety instructions and standards, and also for violations on the use of the vehicles on prohibited roads. According to the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), the goal is to implement the “highest standards of security and safety, promote positive behaviours” on usage of the vehicles. E-scooter riders and cyclists are not permitted to drive on main roads, highways, pedestrian paths, and sidewalks unless these are designated roads for bicycles and e-scooters. Riders are required to wear safety gear, such as helmets and reflective jackets, and follow all traffic safety rules and instructions. In Abu Dhabi, scooters with seats are not allowed as these will be considered as motorcycles and will require a specialized driving permit.
