The Department of Energy-Abu Dhabi has begun an inspection of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) systems in residential buildings and commercial towers in Abu Dhabi. The inspection campaign will run for six months as part of a safety campaign in the emirate. The Department of Energy warned that violators will be fined or face legal proceedings. Public notices will be placed at building entrances at least one week ahead of the inspection date so that tenants can cooperate with inspectors. Specialised teams will check that LPG central gas systems inside buildings pass the UAE’s stringent Fire and Life Safety Code. The teams will check for gas leaks, the integrity of storage tanks, and will recommend safety-related upgrades if needed. Last June, a gas explosion at a restaurant in Abu Dhabi left two people injured. Authorities said the explosion was the result of a gas pipe leak at a restaurant behind Al Falah Plaza on Sultan Bin Zayed The First Street. In 2020, a gas explosion at a restaurant along Abu Dhabi’s Airport Road left three people dead, including two Filipinos, and injured 26 people from various nationalities. ICA/Expat Media
