The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil, and Administrative Cases Court has ordered a man to pay a total of Dh260,000 after issuing two bounced cheques. According to court records, the man had issued the cheques as payment for a debt even though he was aware that his bank account had insufficient funds. Court records showed that the plaintiff filed a civil lawsuit demanding Dh240,000—the value of the two cheques—along with Dh50,000 in compensation for moral and material damages, plus legal costs. The defendant had previously been fined Dh40,000 in a criminal case over the dud cheques but failed to settle the debt. The court noted that the criminal conviction against the defendant for issuing bad cheques was final. Since the defendant was unable to prove that he had cleared the debt, the judge ruled in favor of the plaintiff. The ruling ordered the defendant to pay Dh240,000 plus an additional Dh20,000 in compensation.
