Abu Dhabi boy rape-murder case: death penalty sought
ABU DHABI – The parents of 11-year-old Azan Majid Janjua, who was raped and murdered in May, wants the death penalty meted on the Pakistani suspect.
This as the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court has approved a request by the defense for a psychological evaluation of M.A., who is in his late 20s and is reportedly a brother of the boy's stepmother.
The defense argued that a sane person would not have committed such a heinous crime, thus necessitating the request for a psychological assessment of the suspect. The defense also said the mental and physical examinations to be done on M.A. would help resolve the case.
It would take 45 days before a psychiatric report on the assessments done on the suspect would be ready.
Azan was found dead on May 30 at the rooftop of the residential building where his family lived.
Azan had gone missing after going to a mosque for late afternoon prayers in May. His body was found the next morning by technicians working on the airconditioning units at the rooftop.
The boy's father, who is Pakistani, said Azan was found "half-naked and the Quran was beside him". Azan's mother is Russian.
Prosecutors earlier presented surveillance camera footage of M.A., cross-dressing as a woman, take Azan to the rooftop where he raped the boy and then strangled him with a rope.
The presiding judge asked the parents of the boy if they'd consider a "blood money" request but they rejected the proposal.
Defense lawyer Hassan Matar Al Riyami asked the court to allow the suspect to appear before the court, which the judge allowed.
Al Riyami also said M.A. wanted to meet the boy's father to tell him that he did not commit the crime. The court told the accused to make a request for a meeting and submit it to the court.
M.A. had denied raping and killing Ajan and earlier claimed he was allegedly beaten and coerced by the police and the public prosecution to confessing to the crime.
Meanwhile, the court had set the next hearing on the case for October 11.
