The future of urban transport in the UAE took flight—literally—as Abu Dhabi conducted successful test flights of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxis with California-based company Archer Aviation. The test flights of the Midnight air taxi were carried out at Al Bateen Executive Airport under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). The initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s wider strategy to become a global hub for smart mobility and transport innovation. The demonstration was attended by key figures from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Integrated Transport Centre, Abu Dhabi Airports, and Abu Dhabi Aviation. The test focused on evaluating the aircraft’s vertical take-off and landing capabilities under UAE-specific weather conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, and dust. “This flight marks a significant step towards realising Abu Dhabi’s ambition to lead the world in advanced urban air mobility,” said Badr Al Olama, Director-General of ADIO. “We are enabling companies like Archer to test, certify, and scale next-generation air mobility solutions.” Archer CEO and Founder Adam Goldstein added: “Testing our aircraft in actual operating conditions provides us with the data needed to progress our commercial and certification efforts both in the UAE and in the US.” The test is part of Archer’s Launch Edition commercialisation program with Abu Dhabi Aviation, which will establish air taxi services in the emirate in the near future. These air taxis are designed for short urban commutes, offering faster and more sustainable alternatives to road transport. Abu Dhabi has already approved the UAE’s first hybrid heliport at Zayed Port’s Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal, positioning the city at the forefront of air mobility integration.
