The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court has ordered a woman to pay Dh10,000 in moral damages to another woman after she was found guilty of insulting and defaming her in a criminal case previously upheld on appeal. Court documents revealed that the plaintiff had sought Dh51,000 in compensation for the material, moral, and psychological harm she suffered as a result of the verbal abuse. She told the court that the insults caused her “distress, humiliation, anxiety, and depression,” for which she continues to receive treatment. In its ruling, the court cited the UAE Civil Transactions Law, which states that “any harm caused to another obliges the perpetrator, even if not fully competent, to provide compensation.” The court found that the criminal verdict conclusively proved the defendant’s guilt in insulting and verbally abusing the plaintiff, violating her dignity and emotional well-being. Taking into account the nature and impact of the offence, the court determined that Dh10,000 was a fair and reasonable amount for moral and emotional damages. ICA/Expat Media
