The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Court has found a woman and her son guilty of assaulting a child and ordered them to pay a total of Dh20,000 as punishment. Emarat Al Youm reported that the woman and her son hit the child when a fight broke out between the two children. The father of the victim had sued the mother and son for Dh100,000 for causing his child physical, emotional and psychological damages. The court ordered the woman and her son to jointly pay the victim Dh10,000 as compensation, and a fine of D5,000 each. They will also pay for all the court fees.

UAE child protection law

The UAE’s Child Protection Law ensures that cases of child abuse or negligence are reported and violators are slapped with fines ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh50,000 and given sentences of up to 10 years in jail. The federal law of 2016 was drafted following the death of eight-year-old Emirati girl, Wudeema, who was tortured by her father and girlfriend at their apartment in Dubai in 2012.
