An Abu Dhabi court has ordered a resident to return Dh80,000 that was mistakenly transferred to his bank account and pay a Dh5,000 fine after he failed to return the money. The plaintiff, who accidentally sent the large sum to the defendant’s account, filed a lawsuit after repeated attempts to retrieve his money were ignored. The court found that the defendant had been convicted in a criminal case for misappropriating the funds. The plaintiff also sought Dh10,000 in damages, claiming financial and emotional distress due to the incident. However, the court ruled that Dh5,000 in compensation was sufficient for the inconvenience caused. As per legal procedures, once a final conviction is issued in a criminal case, the civil court can order the return of the misappropriated amount. The court reminded the public that keeping money mistakenly deposited into one’s account without returning it is illegal and can lead to both criminal and financial penalties. Meta Description:
