Abu Dhabi expat in hospital for 2 years after taking supplements

  DUBAI – A 20-year-old South African expatriate remains hospitalized in Abu Dhabi two years after he took non-prescribed supplements that put him in a coma. Tristan Albert reportedly took insulin supplements given to him by someone at a gym that he frequented. It sent him into a hypoglycaemic coma, causing brain injury and respiratory failure.

Albert was rushed to a hospital where he remained in intensive care for more than three months before he was transferred to NMC ProVita International Medical Centre for further treatment. Albert has regained consciousness but is still unable to move or communicate. His health report says he still needs intensive rehabilitation. Meanwhile, hospital bills of Dh43,000 per month are adding to the family’s problems. His father, Neville, said they also owe more than Dh652,000 to one hospital. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), supplements can be bad for one’s health as they “contain active ingredients that have strong biological effects in the body. This could make them unsafe in some situations and hurt or complicate your health”. The FDA advices: “Ask your healthcare provider if the supplement you’re considering would be safe and beneficial for you”.
