The Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) confirmed that the fine for more than one family living in a housing unit in the emirate is Dh12,500 and Dh25,000 if the infringement is repeated within a year. DMT warned of the dangers of overcrowding or collective living, in which a group of individuals live in a dwelling unit whose size or character is insufficient to accommodate the number, making it challenging to provide appropriate services. According to the DMT, an awareness campaign dubbed "Your residence is your responsibility" has begun in the emirate's cities and territories to combat overpopulation. Inspection campaigns will start in the first quarter of 2023 to monitor violators following Law No. 8 of 2019 governing the occupation of real estate and housing units in Abu Dhabi. The DMT stated that administrative penalties and fines ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh1 million would be applied in cases where the law and its implementing regulations are violated. The DMT underlined that the legislation adopts and considers humanitarian cases when applied. It appeals to all residents, real estate owners, and businesses to abide by the law by sticking to the number of individuals per residential unit. It also emphasized the importance of housing workers in designated residential areas away from family houses. The DMT urges everyone in Abu Dhabi to work together to end this issue by monitoring violations and reporting them to the Abu Dhabi Government Call Centre at 800555. BKM/ Expat Media
