Abu Dhabi farmer gets Dh85,000 after falling from crane

A farmer in Abu Dhabi has been awarded Dh85,000 in compensation after he sustained injuries from falling from a crane. The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal ordered the man’s employer to pay him compensation, as well as pay his legal expenses following the accident. According to records, the farmer was trying to move a tree but lost his balance and fell from a crane since his employer failed to provide proper safety tools and equipment for the job. The farmer said that the accident caused him some permanent disability that is making it difficult for him to work normally. He also filed a separate criminal case against his employer, who was found guilty of negligence and fined Dh5,000. In his latest civil lawsuit, the farmer initially demanded compensation of Dh120,000 at the Abu Dhabi Court for Family and Civil and Administrative Cases. The court ordered the insurance company to pay Dh70,000 in compensation. Both parties appealed the verdict and the case was taken to the appeals court, which ruled that the compensation will be increased to Dh85,000 but will be paid by the employer instead of the insurance company. The appeals court also ruled that the employer will pay the farmer’s legal expenses as well as a delay interest of 4 percent from the date of issuance of the ruling. ICA/Expat Media
