Abu Dhabi installs Covid-19 facial scanners

DUBAI – Abu Dhabi authorities began installing Covid-19 facial scanners at public places on Monday (June 28) after health officials approved their use to detect individuals infected with Covid-19. The special scanners will be installed at selected malls, residential areas, airports and border checkpoints starting on June 28, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office. The scanners were already activated in some places on Monday morning. Those found positive of Covid-19 will not be permitted to enter the premises and must take a PCR test within 24 hours. Dr. Jamal Al Kaabi, undersecretary at Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, said the scanners would be used alongside other screening methods, such as PCR testing. The approval of the use of facial scanners follows a trial in Ghantoot, Yas Island and Mussaffah that recorded more than 90 percent accuracy, with 20,000 people tested. The technology was developed by EDE Research Institute Abu Dhabi and detects possible infections by measuring electromagnetic waves that change when RNA particles of coronavirus are present in the person’s body.
