Hotels across Abu Dhabi will soon feature facial recognition technology to enhance guest check-in efficiency and boost security, officials announced at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai. The initiative is led by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) in collaboration with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP). It is currently being piloted at a number of hotels, with the first phase of rollout targeting five-star properties in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain, and the Al Dhafra Region. The second phase will extend to four-star hotels, followed by a gradual expansion across all hotels in the emirate. Authorities have not yet confirmed a timeline for full implementation. The system uses advanced biometric verification by capturing and analyzing guests' facial features during check-in. The data is securely encrypted and sourced from ICP, then transmitted to a centralized database managed by DCT Abu Dhabi. The process will also be used for employee identification and check-out processes. “This initiative reflects our commitment to leveraging innovation to enhance the guest experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and security for both guests and hospitality sector employees,” said Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi. “By working closely with ICP and our hotel partners and national authorities, we are ensuring a seamless, safer and more connected journey for every visitor,” Al Geziry added. The DCT is offering technical and training support to hotels to ensure the new system is rolled out effectively and in compliance with UAE cybersecurity and data privacy laws. The move is part of the UAE’s broader digital-first strategy, which includes expanding the use of biometric technologies in public services. At a recent Federal National Council session, Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention and Minister of State for FNC Affairs, emphasized the country’s commitment to using biometrics—including fingerprint and facial scans—for advanced identification. Biometric technology is already in use at UAE airports. In July 2024, Abu Dhabi Airports partnered with ICP to launch a “biometric smart travel” system at Zayed International Airport, allowing for paperless travel by authenticating passengers through facial recognition alone.
