Authorities in the UAE capital have introduced stricter fines of up to Dh4,000 for motorists who leave abandoned or dirty vehicles in public areas, aiming to maintain the city's cleanliness and aesthetic appeal. The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) announced the penalties as part of its public order enforcement campaign, emphasizing that leaving unkempt vehicles in public spaces negatively impacts the city's image. “The regulation is in place to maintain the cleanliness of Abu Dhabi’s streets and neighborhoods,” according to DMT. “Residents must ensure their vehicles are clean and properly parked to avoid fines.” New fines for abandoned vehicles • First violation: Dh500 fine • Second violation: Dh1,000 fine • Third violation: Dh2,000 fine For abandoned vehicle bodies or frames, separate fines apply: • First violation: Dh1,000 fine • Second violation: Dh2,000 fine • Third violation: Dh4,000 fine Authorities have long been cracking down on abandoned cars, particularly during summer months, when many residents leave their vehicles unattended while traveling. In previous years, the Abu Dhabi Municipality has conducted awareness campaigns to educate residents on the importance of keeping their vehicles clean and properly stored. A similar crackdown exists in Dubai, where leaving an unwashed vehicle in public spaces can result in a Dh500 fine. Inspectors regularly monitor public parking areas, tagging neglected vehicles with warning notices. If the owner fails to clean or move the car within 15 days, it may be impounded. ICA/Expat Media
