Abu Dhabi residents will soon be required to register their microchipped cats and dogs under a new animal ownership service, set to launch on February 3. Announced by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) on Tuesday (January 14), this initiative aims to centralize pet records, improve animal welfare, and control the stray animal population. Individual pet owners have a one-year grace period to complete the registration without penalties, while establishments must comply within six months. The registration process is free until further notice and can be completed through the TAMM portal or by visiting veterinary clinics. “This new service ensures responsible pet ownership while fostering a safer community for humans and animals,” a DMT spokesperson said. Key objectives of the program include reducing the stray animal population, tracking pet health records, enabling proper identification, and promoting regular veterinary care. Pet owners will also benefit from the system's emphasis on annual vaccinations and microchipping. Establishments can use the service to register multiple animals and manage transfers of ownership seamlessly. The program aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader efforts to promote animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

What to do if your pet dies in the UAE

Under UAE law, burying pets is prohibited, with cremation being the only legal option. There are three main types of cremation: 1. Municipality disposal: Deceased pets are frozen at clinics until collected for mass cremation. Ashes are not returned. 2. Shared cremation: Multiple pets are cremated together, with ashes partially returned to owners. Costs range from Dh700 to Dh1,500. 3. Separate cremation: Pets are cremated individually, and owners can keep the ashes. Prices start at Dh2,300. Transportation of deceased pets abroad is strictly prohibited under international laws.
