Abu Dhabi: Man to pay Dh50,000 for assault on ex-wife using a screwdriver

An Abu Dhabi resident was ordered to pay Dh50,000 in damages after being convicted of punching and beating his ex-wife with a screwdriver, causing her to lose her front teeth. The Abu Dhabi Civil Appeals Court upheld an earlier judgment by the court of first instance requiring the man to pay the sum to his ex-wife as compensation for the bodily, moral, and material damages she experienced due to the beatings. According to court documents, the woman filed a complaint against her ex-husband, demanding that he pay her Dh300,000 in damages. She alleged the man had beaten her in the face and other body parts using a screwdriver and had boxed her while they were still married. The attacks caused her to lose her incisors and left her with bruises on her face and other body parts. The couple had separated due to domestic abuse. The woman had previously filed a criminal case against the man, who had been convicted of assaulting her. She then brought a civil claim against him. The Civil Court of First Instance had previously ordered the man to pay his ex-wife Dh50,000 in compensation for bodily, moral, and material damages. However, both the man and the woman filed appeals against the verdict. The man emphasized that his ex-wife had already been awarded Dh16,000 in temporary compensation in the criminal court verdict, which included compensation for all damages. In her appeal, the woman stated that the compensation amount awarded to her by the first insurance court was insufficient compared to the damages she sustained, and she sought to increase it to Dh300,000. The court, however, dismissed all of their claims and upheld the verdict of the first instance court, which granted the woman Dh50,000 in damages for all of her injuries.
