The tourism authority in Abu Dhabi has issued new rules for selling alcoholic beverages, with establishments given six months to comply. The Department of Culture and Tourism — Abu Dhabi (DCT) has specified the technical and ingredient requirements for alcoholic drinks in an advisory issued to distribution companies and retail shop managers. It stated that these guidelines were created to ensure the safety of both consumers and suppliers. The DCT policy requires a minimum alcoholic strength of 0.5%. Wine should not have a vinegar taste or smell, and beer, except caramel, should not contain any artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colorants. "The product must be prepared and handled in accordance with suitable sanitary conditions," it added. The beverages should also be packaged in clean containers that "protect it from pollution and damage." All information about the ingredients, origin, manufacturer, shelf life, and alcohol percentage must be specified on the labels. The rules also addressed other aspects of the types of alcohol used, packaging, transportation, and storage. Retailers and distribution companies have six months to make the necessary changes. Violators will face legal consequences. BKM/ Expat Media
