Inspectors from three government agencies in Abu Dhabi will be dispatched to monitor shops in the emirate on the implementation of the ban on single-use plastic bags. Abu Dhabi’s ban on plastic bags began on June 1. According to the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, inspectors from the agency as well as from Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development and Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Foods Safety were trained on executive regulations surrounding the ban. The ban excludes plastic bags designated for medicines in pharmacies, bag rolls for vegetables, meat, fish, chicken, grains and bread (knot bags). This is in addition to exempting large shopping bags designed for fashion or electronic gadgets, toys, waste bags of different sizes and types, bags designated for keeping messages, postal parcels or magazines and newspapers. Also excluded are bags designated for transporting plants, flowers and laundry bags. Retailers and outlets in Abu Dhabi will give customers the option to use alternative shopping bags for a fee.
