UAE police arrest 4 in credit card scam; Suspects cloned credit card data on magnetic cards that they used to make purchases

  ABU DHABI - Abu Dhabi police have broken up a gang of four Asian nationals who cloned credit cards to make purchases in hotels, resorts and other establishments in the country. The police announced the arrest of the four suspects yesterday as they gave details of the gang's operation. Another person, who works as an operations manager of a retail company, was also apprehended for helping the gang make the illegal purchases. Col. Rashid Borshid, director of the Abu Dhabi Police criminal investigations department (CID)e, said they received reports from foreign banks about purchases from outlets in Abu Dhabi that were charged against the credit card accounts of their clients even if the account owners are not in the UAE. According to the police, the four suspects obtained the data through "international piracy networks" and transferred the balances to magnetic cards such as hotel key cards and loyalty cards. After copying the data on the magnetic cards, the police said the gang members used them for purchases and then destroyed them, knowing that the bank would cancel the transactions after alarm has been raised.
