Abu Dhabi Police has issued a stark warning to motorists after releasing real-life crash footage showing the dangers of distracted driving, particularly using mobile phones behind the wheel. The campaign, launched during Gulf Traffic Week under the theme “Driving Without a Phone,” is part of a wider effort to reduce road accidents in the UAE. In one video, a speeding driver is seen crashing into a vehicle in the third lane. The impact causes the car to slam into a barrier and flip multiple times before landing upside down. In another clip, a distracted motorist veers onto a raised median, causing the vehicle to flip. In a third case, a speeding driver crashes into slow-moving traffic, triggering a chain reaction of collisions involving several vehicles. “Using your phone while driving, even for a moment, can result in catastrophic accidents,” said Abu Dhabi Police. “Distracted driving remains a top cause of road fatalities.” In Abu Dhabi, distracted driving is punishable by an Dh800 fine and four black points. In Dubai, the penalties are more severe—if a distracted driver causes a fatality, the minimum penalty includes one year in jail and a Dh50,000 fine, plus 30-day vehicle impoundment.
