Abu Dhabi Police has released alarming video footage showing how sudden swerving on highways can lead to devastating crashes, renewing their call for drivers to adhere to safe driving practices. The footage, shared on the police's social media platforms, shows multiple incidents of vehicles suddenly changing lanes without signaling, resulting in high-impact collisions. Authorities said these preventable crashes underscore the dangers of reckless driving behaviors, such as abrupt swerving, improper overtaking, and failure to use designated lanes. “Sudden swerving endangers not only the driver but also other motorists. Adhering to proper lane discipline is crucial to ensure everyone’s safety on the road,” a police spokesperson said. The police reiterated that swerving without warning is a major cause of traffic accidents in the UAE, particularly on high-speed roads. They urged drivers to check their surroundings, use indicators, and avoid distractions while driving.

Hefty penalties for sudden swerving

Under UAE traffic laws, sudden swerving incurs a fine of Dh1,000 and four black points on the driver’s license. Reckless driving carries even stricter penalties, including a Dh2,000 fine, 23 black points, and vehicle impoundment for 60 days. Authorities stressed that these penalties are in place to deter drivers from engaging in dangerous behaviors that could cost lives. Authorities encourage residents to report reckless driving through official channels and to stay vigilant while driving, particularly on highways where sudden swerving can have catastrophic consequences. To help prevent accidents, police advised drivers to use indicators when changing lanes, check mirrors and blind spots before overtaking, avoid distractions, such as mobile phones and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
