Abu Dhabi reopens churches, places of worship for non-Muslims

ABU DHABI – Churches and all places of worship for non-Muslims in Abu Dhabi were allowed to reopen on Monday (August 31) following an announcement from the Department of Community Development (CDA). According to the authority, precautionary measures will continue to be enforced and only a maximum of 30 percent of worshippers will be allowed at the venues. The decision to reopen all places of worship comes in conjunction with the steps taken by authorities for the gradual return to normal life amid the coronavirus pandemic. Children and the elderly may enter the places of worship on certain conditions, said Sultan Al Mutawa Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of Community Engagement and Sport sector in CDA. "In response to the places of worship requests and in respect of their religion, it was also decided to allow children to enter the places of worship to practice their religious rituals in a manner that does not conflict with the procedures and laws,” Al Dhaheri said. “Elderly worshipers who do not suffer from any chronic diseases are also allowed to enter according to the procedures that have been set," he added. All activities and events hosted at the places of worship will continue to be suspended, except main prayers. The authority encourages the use of alternative plans such as the use of digital platforms, working remotely for periodic meetings, religious lectures and educational activities. Prayer times must also be reduced to a maximum of one hour, and worshippers must observe a two-metre distance from each other. ICA/Expat Media
