A man involved in a road rage incident in Abu Dhabi has been ordered to pay a woman Dh50,000 in compensation after blocking her vehicle, endangering her safety, and publicly insulting her in front of family members and passersby. The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court ruled in favour of the woman, finding that she suffered psychological and moral harm as a result of the confrontation. The ruling follows an earlier criminal case in which the man was convicted of blocking the woman’s vehicle, putting her life at risk, and insulting her in public. In that case, he was initially sentenced to one month of community service, fined Dh10,000, and had his driving licence suspended for three months. He was also fined Dh5,000 for the public insult. According to court records, the woman filed a separate civil lawsuit seeking Dh70,000 in compensation for the emotional, moral and social damage she said she suffered after the incident, which took place in front of her sister, niece and several bystanders. She argued that the public nature of the confrontation caused humiliation and lasting psychological distress. The Court of Appeal later amended part of the criminal ruling, limiting the punishment for the first charge to community service and reducing the driving licence suspension to one month. However, the civil court said the defendant’s fault had already been clearly established through the criminal judgment and that his actions directly caused moral damage to the plaintiff.
