The Abu Dhabi Family, Civil, and Administrative Cases Court has ruled that a young man must repay his father Dh53,116 after misusing his credit card while his father was abroad. The court’s decision brings to a close a financial dispute that strained family relations. The father had filed a lawsuit demanding Dh97,780 in compensation for the misuse of his card. According to court documents, the father entrusted his son with his credit card to pay household bills while he was out of the country for medical treatment. Instead of fulfilling those obligations, the son allegedly withdrew large sums of money for personal use. During the trial, the father submitted account statements and WhatsApp messages as evidence. Despite his defense, the son failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the unaccounted funds. A court-appointed expert reviewed the financial records and concluded that the son was liable for Dh21,436, in addition to other withdrawals and transfers amounting to Dh31,680. The son had requested that his father take an oath to confirm his claims, but the court dismissed this request, citing the expert’s findings. When the court gave the son an opportunity to take a supplementary oath, he refused, leading the court to rule in favor of the father. In its final ruling, the court ordered the son to repay Dh53,116, including legal fees, and emphasized the importance of family trust in financial matters. ICA/Expat Media
