Abu Dhabi hospital to launch superbugs management tool

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi launched an online portal tool for antimicrobial management to promote the proper use of antibiotics and reduce the antibiotic resistance problem. The new platform would allow SSMC doctors to access up-to-date guidance on treatment options, local patterns of antimicrobial resistance, and the safe and effective usage of drug information from their phones and computers. Antibiotics have been the primary prescription to kill bacteria and save lives since the 1940s. The over-prescription and unnecessary use of antibiotics has created the increasing problem of antimicrobial resistance due to the creation of resistant bacteria known as superbugs. Dr. Zahir Babiker, a consultant physician at SSMC’s Division of Tropical and Infectious Diseases said that over five million deaths have been associated with antimicrobial resistance in 2019 alone according to The Lancet study. “Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest public health challenges of our time,” he emphasized. Over-prescribed antibiotics may cause harm as they weaken a body’s immune system and do not work against viruses. Dr. Babiker explained the need to increase efforts in educating the public about the serious problem of antimicrobial resistance and the role of antimicrobial management tools in this education. “Antibiotics are neither a one-size-fits-all solution nor the only solution,” he said.
