Portable ultrasound machines from Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can save lives by detecting early heart defects in babies. AI-powered portable scanners detect treatable congenital heart anomalies in unborn babies by analyzing scans taken between 18-21 weeks of pregnancy and cross referencing fetal data. These scanners cost $5,000, cheaper than hospital-grade ultrasound machines that cost around $70,000. Using AI to detect anomalies in pregnancy scans reduces assessment time from 40 minutes to just 10-20 minutes. This affordable system can benefit developing nations, saving time for doctors and improving access to prenatal care, said Mohammad Yaqub, Associate Professor in Computer Vision at the university.
